AVIATION MAINTENANCE SHIFT SUPERVISOR

 

Directly Reports To:Director of Maintenance

Mission of 

this Position: Work in direct liaison with the Tropic Ocean Airways Director of Maintenance (DOM) and other leadership, accomplishing and leading maintenance actions in accordance with company policies and FAA regulations. Conducts all maintenance actions, modifications, and/or changes required by flight operations following Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) with timely delivery.  Focus on individual training and mentoring of subordinate technicians to help develop the next generation of maintenance department talent. Ensures quality work, safety, and reliability of their assigned crew and shift with an emphasis on judicious use of personnel, equipment and supplies. In addition to technical leadership responsibilities, serves as the direct first-line supervisor for assigned maintenance personnel. Responsible for employee development, performance management, workforce planning, and supporting the Company's hiring, disciplinary, and employment decision-making processes. 

Key Responsibilities:

Maintenance Activity:

  • Meet or exceed duties/expectations displaying initiative, adhering to TOA SOPs, FAA regulations,andaligning with core values of the organization.
  • Directscrew in performing maintenanceactionsto TOA and FAA standards.
  • Actively leadsor performsaircraftmaintenancewhenrequiredto support the development ofsubordinatesand ensuresthetimelycompletion of daily assignments of thecrew. 
  • Assist DOMandothermaintenanceleadershipbyperformingfinal inspection(s)and approvalfor return-to-serviceofaircraftafter departmentalmaintenanceaction.
  • Acts as the on-shift Quality Assurance (QC) designee, ensuring thebuy-back of critical components or processesof both RII andnon-license technician work. 
  • Has oversight responsibilities of their assigned crewfor the properutilization, completeness and accuracy of companydocuments, logbooks anddataenteredinelectronic maintenance trackingsystems.
  • Ensure the properutilizationof electronic InventoryManagement Systemby theirassignedcrew, thusensuringparts are available for thetimelycompletion ofaircraftbill-of-works(BOW)andtimelyreturn-to-service ofaircraft.
  • Prepareaccuratedailyturnovers andreports of otherstatistical data as requested by leadership.
  • Assist DOM with thetimelycompletionof allCompanyassigned training task(s)or other administrative requirementsof theirassignedcrewby the prescribed deadlines. 
  • Conduct daily crew meetings at the start of each shiftto communicate companyinformation, dailyexpectations,goals,and individual work assignments.
  • Focusesonandreports onopportunities toutilizethe principles ofContinuousImprovementto improve themaintenance departmentand itspersonnel.
  • Monitor subordinate(s)technical performanceand make recommendationsfor futuredepartment or individualtraining opportunities.
  • Conduct and document employee performance evaluations, probationary reviews, and ongoing performance discussions for assigned personnel. Provide recommendationsregardingemployee development, promotion, disciplinary action, and retention.
  • Demonstrate keen communication skills to provide excellence in customer service both internally and externally
  • Responsible forend-of-shift clean-up and security of hangar operationsby ensuring all:
  • Company equipment and tools arereturnedto their assigned storage location.
  • All air hoses and power cords are rolled up andproperly stored.
  • All work areas are clean of debris, old parts andanyliquidsresidueonthefloor areproperly cleaned.
  • All trash cansare emptied,and discarded boxes arethrown in the dumpers.
  • Fans, lights, compressors, hangardoorsand other electrical devices are turned off or unplugged attheend of shift. 
  • Assistleadership in the upkeep of theoffice,hangar,and surrounding facilities.Report anycleaning, repairs, and upkeeprequiredof the physical structure.(e.g., doors, lighting, plumbing, electrical systems)
  • Ensuresall equipment, tools, and suppliesneeded by their creware available, functional, andproperly storedat the end of shift.
  • Ensures the properutilizationand operation ofground support equipment such as tow bars, tugs, and other machinery used in the hangarby their crew. Report anydefects or out-of-service equipment to leadershipand ensure their crew do not utilize such equipment until it is properly repaired and returned to service.
  • Managethe available space within the hangar tooptimizeaircraftstorage, maintenance, and operational activities. 
  • Communicateswith Operationsontheefficient movements and parking ofaircraftin supportof the flight schedule. Ensuringaircraftare staged in amannertofacilitatetimelymovementto the gate or ready line. 
  • Implement and enforcesafety policies and proceduresby conducting daily safetyobservations, thusensuringthe safety of personnel,aircraft, and equipment in the hangar. 
  • Overseefire safety,emergency procedures, andhazardous material handlinganddisposalof their assigned shift. 
  • Ensurethat allhangaroperationscomply withlocal, state, and federal aviation regulations, including OSHA, and EPA standards. 
  • Ensurethat the hangar adheres to environmental regulations related to fuel storage, waste disposal, and hazardous materials handling
  • Manageaccess to the hangar to ensure that only authorized personnel areallowedentry.Coordinatewith security personnel,byusing access control systems, and enforcing security protocols.

Personnel Leadership and Workforce Management:

  • Participate in the recruitment and selection process for maintenance personnel, including candidate screening, interviewing, and hiring recommendations. 
  • Assist the Director of Maintenance and Human Resources with onboarding and integration of newly hired employees. 
  • Provide day-to-day supervision, coaching, mentoring, and development of assigned maintenance personnel. 
  • Conduct and document employee performance evaluations and provide regular performance feedback. 
  • Identifyemployee performance deficiencies and administer coaching, corrective action, and counselingin accordance withCompany policies. 
  • Recommend employee recognition, promotions, transfers, training opportunities, and compensation adjustments based on performance and business needs. 
  • Participate in investigations involving employee conduct, safety concerns, policy violations, and workplace incidents. 
  • Provide recommendationsregardingdisciplinary actions up to and including suspension and termination of employment. 
  • Participate in termination meetings and offboarding activities when requested by Company leadership or Human Resources. 
  • Promote a culture of accountability, professionalism, safety, teamwork, and continuous improvement. 
  • Monitor staffing levels and communicatemanpowerrequirements, scheduling concerns, and succession planning needs to maintenance leadership.
  • Directly supervises assigned maintenance technicians and support personnel during designated shifts. 
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilitiesin accordance withCompany policies and applicable employment laws. 
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, training, assigning work, evaluating performance, coaching employees, addressing complaints, resolving personnel issues, recommending disciplinary action, andparticipatingin hiring and termination decisions.

Essential Skill Set:

  • Airframe and powerplant (A&P) license from FAA
  • 5+years’ experiencein a FAA Part 91, Part 121, Part 125, Part 135, or Part 145 maintenance environmentor military aviation maintenance environment
  • Strong honesty, integrity,adherence to ethnical actions,and respect for teammates
  • Prior supervisory or team leadership experience in an aviation maintenance environment preferred. 
  • Demonstrated experience conducting employee coaching, performance management, and disciplinary discussions preferred. 
  • Knowledge of employment practices, workplace investigations, and personnel management principles preferred
  • Strong attention to detail, ensuring accuracy in areas of responsibility
  • Ability to work independently with strong initiative and to focus on achieving operational goals
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Highly organized and able to prioritize tasks and balance multiple responsibilities
  • Effective spoken and written communicator, with ability to be clearly understood by subordinates, supervisors, andexternal personnel
  • Experience with modern avionicssystems(e.g.,GarminG1000,CollinsProLine 21, other glass cockpit systems)
  • Experience with Cessna Caravan (C208) orPratt & Whittney PT6A engine are a plus
  • Experience with data analyticsis a plus
